Q: Is stainless steel hard to mill?
Stainless steel is more difficult to machine than ordinary steel, mainly due to its material properties, which pose special challenges to the machining process.

High Toughness and Work Hardening
Stainless steel has high toughness, which causes plastic deformation during cutting, leading to faster tool wear. During machining, the surface of the material easily hardens (with a hardened layer depth of 0.1-0.3mm), further accelerating tool wear.

Low Thermal Conductivity
Stainless steel has approximately one-third of the thermal conductivity of carbon steel (for example, 304 stainless steel has a thermal conductivity of 16.3 W/m·K). The cutting heat is not easily dissipated, and the tool temperature can quickly rise above 600°C, accelerating tool edge wear.
Stickiness of the Material
At high temperatures, stainless steel tends to stick to the tool material (especially austenitic stainless steel), causing chips to accumulate on the tool edge. This negatively impacts machining accuracy and surface quality.
