Introduction to Tungsten Carbide
Tungsten Steel (also known as tungsten alloy or cemented carbide) is a type of alloy steel containing tungsten as a key element. It is commonly referred to as tungsten carbide and colloquially known as “hard alloy” or “tungsten gold.”
Main Elements:
In addition to tungsten (W) and carbon (C), it typically includes other metals such as chromium (Cr), vanadium (V), molybdenum (Mo), and cobalt (Co).
Key Properties:
Extremely high hardness (HRA 88–93)
Exceptional wear resistance and heat resistance
Excellent compressive strength and chemical stability
Typical Applications:
Widely used in mold manufacturing, aerospace, medical devices, high-end cutting tools, and defense industries.
Typical Types of Tungsten Carbide Machined Components
1. Mold Components
Widely used in cold stamping, hot forging, and powder metallurgy tooling due to their superior wear resistance:
- Punches
- Dies (Male / Female)
- Core Inserts
- Guide Posts and Bushings
- Stop Blocks / Locating Blocks
- Mold Inserts / Forming Elements
2. Cutting Tools
Tungsten carbide is a primary material for high-performance cutting tools:
- Carbide End Mills
- Drills
- Reamers / Profile Tools
- Turning Inserts / Milling Inserts
- Gear Hobs / Shaper Cutters
3. Medical Components
Used in surgical instruments and high-precision medical devices, requiring excellent corrosion resistance and surface finish:
- Surgical Blades
- Orthopedic Burrs / Milling Cutters
- Locating Inserts / Mirror-Finished Parts
- Medical Core Components
4. Aerospace Components
Designed for high-temperature and high-stress aerospace applications:
- Nozzle Liners
- Turbine Blades / Guide Vanes
- Valve Seats / Seal Rings
- High-Strength Inserts / Fasteners
5. Defense and Armor Components
Used in ballistic protection and structural parts for extreme environments:
- Armor-Piercing Core Rods
- Ballistic Armor Inserts
- Radiation Shielding Blocks
- Tungsten Counterweights / Energy Absorbers
6. Industrial Wear Parts
Applied in high-wear, high-load, and frequent-use industrial environments:
- Wear Rails / Slides
- Carbide Rollers / Rings
- Guide Pins / Shock Blocks
- Rotary Seals / Limit Bushings
